SYRUPS :
Syrups are concentrated aqueous
Preparation of a sugar or sugar substitutes with or without flavoring
agents and medicinal substances.
ADVANTAGES :
- Easiest route of administration.
- Economical and safe to the patient.
- No nursing is required.
- Appropriate for any age group patient.
DISADVANTAGES:
- Delayed onset of action.
- Can't avoid first pass metabolism.
- Not Convenient for a patient having gastro -intestinal disorder.
Classification OF Syrups:
They are classified into two types:
1 Medicated Syrup:
- Analgesic - Meperidine Hydrochloride.
- Anticholinergic - Dicylomine Hydrochloride.
- Anticonvulsant - Sodium Valproate.
2 Non- Medicated Syrup
- Cocoa Syrup.
- Orange Syrup.
- Raspberry Syrup.
COMPONENTS OF SYRUPS:
1 ) Sweetening agent : e.g. Sucrose , Sugar.
2 ) Antimicrobial Preservatives : e.g. Benzoic acid , Sodium Benzoate , Methyl – Propyl .
3 ) Flavouring agents : e.g. Orange oil , Vanillin.
4 ) Colorants : e.g. Green with mint , Chocolate with brown.
5 ) Alcohol : ( 15 to 20% ) [ if alcohol soluble components are present in syrup ]
6 ) Purified water.
